BEGINNING OF OUR JOURNEY

DAY 3

We successfully started our 6 month long journey. Left Chicago three days ago, now we are in Calgary, sitting at a coffee shop where we have internet access. Sleeping in the back of our van is surprisingly more comfortable than we thought. We have about three days to make it to Fairbanks. Let’s see if we can pull it off.

EFOODS DIRECT

What a beautiful sight! We took all of the packaged meals out of the boxes in order to sort them out and laid them on the grass. They made a beautiful collage.

OUR FOOD FROM SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER

We are so happy to have e-Foods Direct as our nutrition supplier! When we accepted their sponsorship we assumed the food would be monotonous and bland but quite the opposite is true. It tastes great and as you can see from the photo it is diverse. It is exactly what we needed: compact, won’t spoil and diverse enough that we won’t get tired of eating it.

VEHICLE GRAPHICS SPONSOR

We would like to thank Mr. Sharf Alam and Comet Press & Media Services for graciously contributing their talent and resources to Know No Borders expedition. They helped design, format and print our vehicle art: map graphics, expedition logos and sponsors eFoods Direct, our Make A Wish Foundation project and our friends at Coast to Coast radio station.

EVAN'S WORLD

Just put up a map showing our journey and graphics of our affiliates on our vehicle.

NEW VEHICLE GRAPHICS

We appreciate working together with the Illinois Make a Wish foundation as we hope to raise both awareness of this great cause and funds in order to help make some special dreams come true.

We proudly represent eFoods Direct as we consume their excellent products during our expedition.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

To our great regret we were forced to be postpone our expedition until next fall due to a sudden serious family problem of one of the key members of the team. We are saddened but nevertheless determined to see this project through.

We appreciate your continued support!

EFOODS DIRECT SPONSORSHIP

eFoodsDirect serves their customers by providing quality products and excellent customer service each and every day. When their customers serve an eFoods meal they can always count on it’s ease of preparation, delicious flavor, and high nutritional value.

We are happy to announce that efoods direct will be providing our food supplies for the entire four month journey!

August 7, 2012

We are so excited to be able to utilize eFoodsDirect food supply! Both of us consumed some samples a few months ago and were surprised how good it tasted. From any angle you look at this, this is the best product for us to take on our expedition. The packets are stored easily, do not take much space, the absence of water makes them very light, the food doesn’t spoil for a long long time, there is great variety of meals we can prepare, one doesn’t need to know how to cook, just add hot water...could we ask for more?

Besides having stored this product for disaster situations, I could see hundreds of other applications. This food is perfect for anyone who values good taste, high nutrition, ease of preparation, and product longevity. We can’t wait to have a rich meal waiting for us every day! For anyone interested in this product, we will have periodic reports about our impressions and experiences consuming this food for four months. Stay tuned!

WORKING ON THE VEHICLE

REPLACING DOOR HANDLES

Never thought it would be that difficult and we’d have so little space between the door panel to attach the moving/opening mechanism!

Three out of four (driver, passenger, back) door handles were faulty- all had cracks in their mechanism so we’ve replaced them. Couldn’t have inaccessible doors give us problems during the trip!

MAKING THE BED

Six feet long and over four feet wide, the wooden structure will accommodate two mattresses side by side. Two by sixes will create the base where most of our supplies will be stored. A sheet of compressed wood will be placed on top to support the mattresses.

VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS - PART 1

THE BEGINNING

We power-washed the van and cleaned the motor. There is a reason we chose a vehicle that will not cause much attention while driving through Mexico and Colombia and the rest of Latin America. Some route passages are very dangerous and we try to have as small a bulls eye painted on our backs as possible.

A FEW THOUGHTS ABOUT THE JOURNEY

I KEEP THINKING ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO TRAVEL OVER 40,000 MILES...

....to crisscross both American continents. Such an extensive and challenging expedition will test our endurance and resolve. Dangers may present themselves not only in the form of impassable/non existent roads, bad weather or vehicle mechanical failures but more menacingly as hostile environments, specifically in Mexico and Colombia. This journey will test our character and through our constant connection to social media and our website we will be able to share our experiences with you on regular basis.

VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS

For our transportation vehicle we decided to use a Chevy Astro Cargo Van 1996. The cargo section will have a storage and a sleeping section. The power train and undercarriage is undergoing extensive repairs and modifications of which we will soon post the details.
